What is the different between email aliases added / set under the domain setting vs under the user alias setting?

It seems to me they are the same thing? when I tried to add an email alias under the domain iredadmin complain if it is already used up under the user setting.

Are there any advantage to adding it under the user vs domain setting? One thing that makes it better to add under the domain setting is that you can see them and know that the alias already exist / taken.

Alias added under the user setting are not shown anywhere else (as far as I can see). This makes it very difficult to tell who has taken the alias.

am I missing something?

Re: email aliases under user setting vs under domain setting

*) In domain profile page, tab "Aliases" is used to manage alias mail domains.
*) In user profile page, tab "Aliases" is used to manage alias mail addresses.

You can search the alias email address in search field on top-right corner.

I'm still not clear on this. I'm not referring to the domain alias, I am referring to the "Aliases under domain: mydomain.com." vs "Profile of user: user@mydomain.com"->Aliases

Could you help capture screenshots for these two place to help me understand your question?

What is the different between the two?

Re: email aliases under user setting vs under domain setting

Where can I see a complete list (like the alias list under domain) of ALL aliases "under user profile"? for management & auditing purpose.

At the moment (if an  alias is used under user profile) I won't know until I try to create one and it fails. Would it make more sens to show a combined list of both aliases currently in used (under domain & user), maybe have the aliases created under user profile grey out so that it can't be selected (in user profile->General tab http://picpaste.com/2014-02-19_112017-KsjnQ7NQ.jpg )

Unfortunately, no other way except go to account profile page.

Aliases created under user profile won't appear there.
