i have somehow lost all emails that are older than 1 week, i looked at my email during the day yesterday and saw all the ones i knew should be in the inbox, then last night i looked and they had all gone except any that were delivered this week.
this has happened on all mails, according to mysql my mailbox had over 3000 messages, now maybe 30  .... i though i was backing up /var/vmail as well but it seems that i haven't!!!!!

what should my first steps be to at least try to find out why this happened. ?
if i can't get them back ill be a bit gutted but i really would like to understand how this happened.

well it seems its not such a disaster as first thought as i do have a backup of the vmail1 folder from a week ago.. so after a bit of work i do have the (most if not all) mails back, i still do not know how all but a weeks worth got deleted as its very specific.

Maybe your mail client moved them to your local computer then moved them back, mail clients are strange programs

It sounds like caused by Mac Mail.app. Did you choose to delete message when emails were 'old week old' in Mac Mail.app?
