No idea at all, looks like bug in SpamAssassin or Amavisd.

Of course i find the solution after i wrote the above post - a buddy said he had the same problem with another system.

it actually was a permission problem for the folder /var/lib/spamassassin/3.003001 and the files in it...
after an chmod and restart of amavisd everything worked again.

now i just have to wonder why it worked to begin with

Reboot didnt help - i also tried to delete the lock files without it helping.

I had the server up and running yesterday, and havent touched it since. Now i was about to move a few more domains over to test more, but i cant send / recive mails
